Gender discrimination to be fined up to $2,350
Monday, 27 July 2009
Those who violate gender equality will be fined up to 40 million VND ($2,350),
according to a government decree on the issue slated for taking effect from
August 1.
Foreigners who violate gender equality in Vietnam can be expelled. Those who
incite other pregnant women to undergo sex-selective abortion will be fined 3-5
million VND ($176.5-294.1), and those who sack employees due to gender reasons
or because they get pregnant or breed infants will be subject to fines of 5-10
million VND ($294.1-588.2).
Forms of gender discrimination can be distorted advertisements, denial of
access to training courses, improper assignment of jobs, prohibition of wives
or husbands participating in social activities, or creation of artistic works
due to gender prejudice.
Between two and three million Vietnamese young men are unlikely to find a
wife by 2030 if Vietnam’s
current unbalanced sex ratio at birth remains unchanged, warns the Ministry of
Health.
The country’s male/female ratio at birth is now 112/100, while the ratio
generally should be 105 boys to 100 girls as defined by the United Nations
Population Fund.
