The Hồ Chí Minh Municipal People’s Committee has passed an action plan in response to climate change in 2011-2015.

The city plans to spend around VND 12 trillion (US $600 million), with a half coming from domestic capital to deal with climate change.

The action plan targets to successfully implement measures on climate change adaptation and response for sustainable development, utilize opportunities to develop low-carbon economy and work with the international community to reduce the impacts of climate change and protect the global environment.  

Hồ Chí Minh City will finalize ultimate researches and specific assessments on climate change impacts in each sector and field, vulnerable risks, response capacity, resettlements in response to sea level rise in order to take proper actions.

The action plan defines prioritized tasks and measures on such areas as urban planning, natural resource, energy, agriculture, sewage management, and healthcare in a bid to assist local residents to cope with future risks.

Việt Nam was listed as one of five countries most susceptible to climate change and Hồ Chí Minh City was rated as one of ten cities most threatened by the issue, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

It was forecasted that sea levels would rise by 65 cm in the near future, submerging 128 square kilometers of land which accounts for 6.3% of the city’s area./.
