The World Bank will continue to prioritize capital for Việt Nam’s clean water supply and rural sanitation programs in the next ten years, said Mr. Dean Cira, Sector Coordinator of the WB Urban Development Department.


Mr. Dean Cira made the statement at a seminar held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Hà Nội on March 23.

He stressed the importance of Việt Nam’s national strategy on clean water and rural environmental sanitation by 2020.

Mr. Vũ Văn Thặng, Deputy Head of the Irrigation Department under the MARD said since the strategy was approved 10 years ago, number of people using safe water increased from 30% to 83% in 2010.

The 2020 strategy will focus on disadvantaged people and sustainable environmental development in line with a socio-economic development plan.

The strategy aims to provide safe water for 95% of the rural population and sanitation toilets for 85% of the rural population./.
