pho.gifSouth American armchair gourmets were introduced to Vietnam’s unique cuisine last month when a series filmed by Argentine celebrity chef Narda Lepes was broadcast.

The Argentine lifestyle channel El Gourmet last month broadcast “Gourmet Vietnam y Camboya” (Gourmet Vietnam and Cambodia), a series that chronicled Lepes’ gastronomical journey through Hanoi, northern Ha Long Bay, Sa Pa, the former imperial city of Hue, the ancient town of Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.

Lepes told Vietnam News Agency she focused on Vietnam for its authentic national dishes that reflect the country’s diverse climate and the influence of neighboring countries.

The celebrity chef said she was impressed and surprised by Vietnamese people’s habit of visiting local markets every day for fresh food.

Lepes said she enjoyed many local delicacies, including spring rolls, “pho” (noodle soup) and the fish sauce, while in Vietnam.

Her series also focused on the food of Vietnam’s neighbor Cambodia and the ancient temple city of Angkor Wat.

The tour was well received not only in Argentina, where it was aired in prime time, but also in other Latin American countries, where the series was broadcast on cable television.

Vietnamese food has become fashionable among food lovers in Argentina’s capital city, Buenos Aires, where Vietnamese restaurants such as Green Bamboo and Sudestada are popular for their exotic fare.
