The global climate change will surely affect Việt Nam’s urban areas, especially those along the coastal line, agreed participants to a recent workshop held in the coastal city of Đà Nẵng.

The increasing population density will impose threats on sustainable development of Việt Nam’s Mekong Delta, Red River Delta, and central coastal areas. The sea level rise is the biggest growing danger for human living space.

Repeated droughts and flood in the Central Region, rising tide in Hồ Chí Minh City, and unusual flood season in the Mekong Delta are vivid examples of the global climate change.

Unplanned urban development and rising fertility also exacerbate the climate change effects.

The participants to the seminar, themed “Urban areas in  Việt Nam and climate change,” stressed the necessity to make more comprehensive policies relating to urban planning and management as well as mechanisms for green and safe development.

Addressing the climate change cannot be separated from improving people’s awareness and responsibility and promoting international cooperation, they said.

Many architects emphasized the long-term vision in planning cities, the importance of energy saving, and measures to counter climate change while adapting to abnormalities of the nature.
