VN attends int’l trade fair in India

New Delhi (VNA)- Vietnamese Ambassador to India Nguyen Thanh Truong cut the ribbon to inaugurate the Vietnam Pavilion at the 30th India International Trade Fair (IITF 2010) that opened in the Indian capital city of New Delhi on Nov.14.


Three Vietnamese companies including Viet Silk, Nhu Hoa and Duong Quynh Anh showcased their handicraft products, garments, consumer goods, silks and lacquer paintings at seven pavilions.

Additionally, documents on the Vietnamese economy, trade, investment, tourism and sample products of large companies in the country were also on display.

Over 400 companies from 38 countries including the UK, France, Germany, Russia, Japan and the Republic of Korea along with more than 7,000 exhibitors from the host country displayed IT products, electrical equipments, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, rubbers, handicrafts, jewelries, consumer goods and a wide range of services in construction, transportation and machinery manufacturing.

Held by the India Trade Promote Organisation under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the event aims to introduce domestic products and promote trade exchange with countries all over the world.

Direct air route between Hanoi-Warsaw opens

 
 

Hanoi (VNA) – The LOT Polish Airlines on Nov. 14 officially opened a direct air route from Warsaw to Hanoi with the first flight landing at the Noi Bai International Airport the same day.

LOT head representative to Vietnam Krzysztof Kolodziej said that Hanoi is the airline’s only destination in Southeast Asia and is expected to be the gate to Asia for its passengers.

LOT serves three flights per week on the route.

He also said that leaving Hanoi in the early morning and leaving Warsaw late at night, the time of the route’s fights is ideal for passengers to flight to other airports in the Europe and vice versa.

On the occasion of the route launching, LOT offers a special discount for flights to Europe from Nov. 15.

Accordingly, a one-way ticket from Hanoi to Poland is 199 USD and from Hanoi to other destinations in Europe is 299 USD.-Enditem

Vietnam officially joins TPP negotiations

 
 

Tokyo (VNA) – Vietnam will participate in Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement negotiations as an official member, State President Nguyen Minh Triet has said.

He affirmed that Vietnam will work together with other members to turn TPP into a new and dynamic regional economic integration for member countries’ benefits and contribute to promoting economic integration, growth and prosperity in the region.

President Triet made these remarks at the first-ever summit of TPP members, including Brunei, Chile, the US, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam, in Yokohama, Japan, on Nov. 14, on the sidelines of the 18 th APEC Summit.

The 18 th APEC Summit wrapped up successfully in Yokohama with the adoption of the Statement on “Yokohama Vision – Bogor and Beyond” along with the Statement on 2010 Bogor Goals Assessment, the APEC Leaders’ Growth Strategy, and measures towards Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP).

The same day, the Vietnamese President held a meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon where they shared common viewpoints on positive progress in the Vietnam-Mexico relations and vowed to continue to boost all-sided cooperation, especially in economy, trade and investment.

The two presidents agreed to step up the establishment of a joint committee for economic, trade, scientific and technological cooperation.

President Calderon said Mexico will continue to train students for Vietnam and wants to learn from Vietnam ’s experiences and get the country’s coordination in its organisation of the 16 th UN Conference on Climate Change later this year.

Late the same day, President Triet and his entourage visited Nagoya city, Aichi prefecture, where he received Aichi Governor Masaaki Kanda, Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura, President of the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jiro Takahashi and leaders of the Japan Central Economic Association.

President Triet said together with the two countries’ strategic partnership, the relations between Vietnamese and Japanese localities and the cooperation between businesspeople are important, bringing practical and specific outcomes to their peoples.

He praised Aichi prefecture and Nagoya city for actively stepping up economic ties with Vietnam , naming the success of Toyota group in Vietnam .

The President expressed his hope that Vietnamese students in the prefecture will really act as a bridge to enhance the relations between Vietnam and Japan .

The Aichi Governor delivered wishes to develop cooperation with Vietnam and stressed that President Triet’s visit is a big opportunity for Aichi prefecture and Nagoya city to expand their cooperation with Vietnamese localities.-Enditem

578 professors, ass. professors honoured in 2010

 
 

Hanoi (VNA)- A ceremony was held in Hanoi on Nov.11 to present the titles of professor and associate professor to 578 lecturers nationwide

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, chairman of the State Council of Professor Title congratulated 71 professors and 517 associate professors and expressed his desire that they will bring their intelligence and passion into play to develop education and training, and scientific research in Vietnam, contributing to the country’s industrialisation, modernisation, and international integration.

He also suggested that professors and associate professors nationwide take the lead in promoting tertiary education, advanced level training and scientific research.

In the 1980-1985 period, Vietnam awarded the titles of professor and associate professors to 142 people per year while in the 1991-2000 period, the number was 454.

At present, there are about 9,000 professors and associate professors nationwide, of whom 1,407 are professors.-Enditem

Vietnam focuses on diabetes prevention

 
 

Hanoi (VNA) – About 5 percent of Vietnam ’s population have diabetes and between 15-20 percent of the people are at a high risk of developing diabetes, according to the Central Endocrine Hospital ’s recent survey.

These figures were announced at a meting in response to World Diabetes Day jointly held by the Health Ministry and the World Health Organisation in Hanoi on Nov. 14.

Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen warned that lifestyle changes, less physical activity and unhealthy eating are making a rise in the prevalence of diabetes in Vietnam .

As the disease costs its victims dear, the Health Ministry has asked the Prime Minister to supplement funding for the national anti-diabetes target programme in the 2011-2015 period to promote preventive measures widely to reduce new cases of diabetes as well as the disease complications.

According to experts, diabetes cannot be cured yet, however, 80 percent of type 2 diabetes cases can change the course of the disease with a healthy diet and more exercise.

WHO Country Representative Jean-Marc Olive suggested that Vietnam should manage diabetes right from communal and district hospitals to make the prevention and combat against the disease more effective.

Following the meeting, the Central Endocrine Hospital ’s doctors provided consultancy on healthy diet for preventing diabetes and its complications together with free blood sugar tests for 500 participating people.

The same day, more than 5,000 people joined an anti-diabetes meeting in Ho Chi Minh City , where nearly 35 percent of the city’s population are facing blood sugar transformation disorder and the prevalence of diabetes rose 185 percent over the past seven years.

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure and non-traumatic lower limb amputations.-Enditem

Former US President pledges more help to VN

 
 

Hanoi (VNA) – Former US President Bill Clinton, who is President of the Clinton Foundation, affirmed that the fund will continue to help Vietnam in HIV/AIDS prevention, expand cooperation in coping with climate change and manage water resources, especially in the Mekong region.

Clinton made the remark while he was receiving by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Hanoi on Nov. 14.

At the reception, both sides discussed active developments in the Vietnam-US relationship after 15 years of normalisation, prospects for the future and the Clinton Foundation’s HIV/AIDS prevention and climate change related activities in Vietnam .

Clinton said he was impressed with significant changes in Vietnam since his last visit to the country in 2005.
PM Dung highlighted President Clinton’s support in promoting the Vietnam-US relations and thanked him and his foundation for their charitable activities in Vietnam .
PM Dung said that Vietnam has always attached importance to developing relations with the US and wants to improve cooperation in all fields in the future. He asked the US to continue to help Vietnam overcome the aftermaths of war, including the consequences of Agent Orange.

Since 2005, the Clinton Foundation has directly helped Vietnam in perfecting its system for treating HIV/AIDS and improved health workers’ skills in diagnosing, taking care of and treating people living with HIV/AIDS in Vietnam . The Foundation has also implemented a climate change initiative to support the country’s two major cities, Hanoi and HCM City .

Earlier, Clinton had a meeting with officials and nearly 600 students from the University of Foreign Trade and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.
At the meeting, Clinton shared his thoughts on the prospects for Vietnam-US relations and expressed his wish that the people of both nations, especially young Vietnamese people will continue to develop the Vietnam-US relationship.

Since 1995, Vietnam and US have been maintaining a positive and comprehensive relations in all fields, namely politics, diplomacy, economics, trade, science and technology, education and training, security and defence, and human assistance, he said.

The students that the US has become Vietnam ’s largest export market and is currently one of the six largest foreign investors in the country with committed investment of 15 billion USD, Clinton said.

The approval and effectiveness of the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement in 2001 have created a breakthrough in bilateral trade. Despite the economic downturn in 2009, the US exports to Vietnam increased by 7 percent, he said.

Education cooperation is also a success in bilateral relationship. 13,000 Vietnamese students in US universities make the Southeast Asian country the eighth among all nations in the world in terms of the number of students in the US , he noted.-Enditem

Vietnam wins first ASIAD medal

 
 

Guangzhou (VNA) - Vietnamese wushu artist Nguyen Manh Quyen snagged the first medal for Vietnam on Nov. 14, the second day of the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD) which is taking place in Guangzhou , China .

Quyen performed excellently and scored 9.69 points in both Daoshu and Gunshu events to win a bronze medal with a total of 19.38 points, behind gold medal winner Jia Rui from Macau and silver medalist Lee Jong-chan from the Republic of Korea .

Winning a medal was a surprise for Quyen, who is participating in the Asian Games for the first time.

Also on the second day of the competition, Nguyen Phuc Long won his Indonesian rival in the eight-ball billiard.

In Judo, Nguyen Thi Ly lost her Kazakhstan rival in the women’s 70kg category, while Le Khac Nhan lost his Japanese artist in the men’s 81kg.

The shooting team ranked fifth among participating teams, while the female football team played the first match at the games, loosing 1-6 against the girls from the Republic of Korea . The Vietnamese girls were scheduled to play against the host China on Nov. 16.-Enditem

New friendship symbol for Vietnam-Laos ties

 
 

Vientiane (VNA)- A hand-over ceremony of works of That Luang square, Saysettha park and Vientiane 450-year roundabout, as gifts of the Vietnamese government to Laos, was held in the Lao capital city of Vientiane on Nov.14.

At the event, Deputy PM Somsavad Lengsavad affirmed that the works are the new symbol for the special friendship between the two countries, contributing to sustainable Laos-Vietnam relations on the occasion of the 450 th anniversary of Vientiane and the 35 th anniversary of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

Being started on Oct.20, 2008 and finished on Nov.12, 2010, the 81 billion VND works were invested by Vietnam’s High Command of Military Zone 4 and built by the Laos’ COECCO construction company.-Enditem

Overseas Vietnamese in UK meet in Dublin

 
 

London (VNA) - Vietnamese people who live and work in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland gathered for the first time in Dublin city, Ireland , on Nov. 12.

Addressing the meeting, the Vietnamese Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Tran Quang Hoan, highlighted its significance to uniting Vietnamese expatriates.
The Ambassador said that the meeting provided an opportunity to develop overseas Vietnamese communities and seek more cooperation between Vietnamese businesses in these two countries.

Representatives of the Associations of Vietnamese in Ireland and the UK and the Association of Vietnamese Entrepreneurs in the UK delivered speeches on their current activities and orientations for the future.

On this occasion, on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem, Ambassador Hoan presented the Association of Overseas Vietnamese in Ireland with the certificate of merit for its outstanding achievements in developing the community and holding activities towards the homeland.-Enditem

Vietnam attends Asia cuisine festival in Bangkok

 
 

Bangkok (VNA) - Vietnam joined eight Asian countries and territories in the Asia Cuisine Festival held in Bangkok from Nov. 12-14.

With the country’s red national flag, green bamboo and a traditional conical hat, Vietnam’s booth attracted a lot of visitors, who enjoyed tasting traditional Vietnamese dishes such as banh chung (square sticky rice cake), gio cha (pork pies), nem ran (fried meat roll), xoi vo (glutinous rice cooked with split peas) and, especially, pho bo (beef noodle soup).

Vietnam ’s Trade Counselor Nguyen Thanh Hung said this is the first time the country has taken part on a large scale in such an event in Thailand to promote the country’s national dishes.

At the festival, host Thailand introduced its well-known tom yum kung dish (hot and sour shrimp soup) while Indonesia displayed chicken roasted over charcoal.-Enditem

Miss Japan wins Best in National Costume award

 
 

Binh Thuan (VNA)- Miss Japan Marina Kishira was declared winner of the Miss Earth 2010 National Costume competition, after beating 75 contestants in the central coastal province of Binh Thuan on Nov. 13.

Top five winners at the competition including Jennifer Stephanie Pazmino from Ecuador, Nondyebo Dzingwa from South Africa, Claudia Lopez Mollinedo from Mexico and Luisa Lopes from Brazil.

Miss Japan was also named Miss Sea Links City with a prize worth 5,000 USD.

Earlier, Miss India Nicole Faria was crowned Miss Earth Talent on Nov. 9 in Ho Chi Minh City.

The 2010 Miss Earth pageant will take place in Ho Chi Minh City, the provinces of Binh Thuan, Nha Trang, Hoi An and Phu Yen from Nov. 4-Dec.4.-Enditem
