Vietnam attends ASEAN-related health meetings
 
Hanoi (VNA) - Minister of Health Nguyen Quoc Trieu headed a Vietnamese delegation to attend ASEAN-related health meetings in Singapore from July 21-24.

At the 10 th ASEAN Health Ministers’ Meeting on July 22, Trieu delivered a speech, highlighting Vietnam’s achievements in expanding and upgrading its healthcare networks at all levels, controlling and stamping out a wide range of dangerous diseases, stepping up the application of scientific-technological advances and providing medicines and medical equipment.

People from all parts of the country have been provided with better health care services and most of the common targets about people’s health have exceeded those of nations that have the same per capita income as Vietnam , he said.

Vietnam proposed the selection of June 15 as ASEAN Dengue Day in order to enhance political commitments and encourage society to participate further in the fight against the disease.

Trieu told the participants that Vietnam worked out a dengue prevention and control project, which promotes the engagement of the community and inter-sectoral cooperation. The project is estimated to cost 1.9 million USD.

The ministers adopted a regional strategic framework on healthcare development for the 2010-2015 period and a joint statement, aimed at boosting cooperation within the bloc and mobilise all available resources in the field.

Trieu joined his counterparts from the 10 ASEAN member countries, China , Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) in the 4 th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting Plus Three on July 23.

The ministers focused discussions on the healthcare system’s requirements for treating infectious and non-infectious diseases, ways of coping with consequences of climate change, natural disasters and catastrophes, as well as Vietnam ’s initiative on the ASEAN Dengue Day. They also approved a joint statement of the meeting.

At the 3 rd ASEAN Health Ministers’ Meeting Plus China on the same day, the ministers agreed to beef up cooperation in traditional medicines, accomplishing the Millennium Development Goals, preventing and combating infectious and non-infectious diseases, managing medical emergency systems and setting up a centre to forecast and share information about health risks.

Trieu shared Vietnam ’s experiences in using traditional medicines and urged the regional countries to accelerate studies and apply traditional medicines to healthcare services.

Two days earlier, the Vietnamese minister attended an East Asian dialogue forum on healthcare policies.-Enditem

Ha Giang’s senior leader expelled from Party
 

Ha Giang (VNA) -- Nguyen Truong To, Vice Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee of Ha Giang province, has been expelled from the Party for his violations.

The Executive Committee of the provincial Party Committtee convened an extraordinary meeting on July 25 to announce a decision regarding the disciplinary measure, which was issued by the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat on July 19.

Politburo member and permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Truong Tan Sang and Secretary of the provincial Ha Giang Party Committee Hoang Minh Nhat co-chaired the meeting.

According to the decision, To was expelled from the Communist Party of Vietnam for his ‘very serious’ violations in terms of morality and lifestyle that caused discontent in the Party and society.

Also on July 25, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung requested the Ha Giang People’s Council to dismiss To from his People’s Council membership and the chairmanship of the provincial People’s Committee.

Four days earlier, the Prime Minister also signed a decision to suspend To from the post of Chairman of the Ha Giang People’s Committee.-Enditem

Congratulations to Cuba on armed uprising
 

Hanoi (VNA) - Leaders of the Vietnamese Party, State, Government and National Assembly on July 25 extended congratulations to Cuban leaders on the 57 th anniversary of the military attack on the Moncada barracks (July 26).

Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, State President Nguyen Minh Triet and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung sent congratulatory messages to Fidel Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee (CPCCC), and Raul Castro Ruz, Second Secretary of the CPCCC and President of the State Council and the Council of Ministers.

NA Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong cabled a message of congratulations to his Cuban counterpart Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada.

On this occasion, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem also sent a congratulatory message to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.

A get-together was held in the Red River Delta province of Vinh Phuc on July 24 -25 to mark the event.

While addressing the function, the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association’s Vice President Nguyen Duy Cuong recalled historical and struggle stages of Cuba , especially the military attack on the Moncada barracks, which was led by Fidel Castro on July 26, 1953.
The attack was the start of the Cuban people’s armed revolution against the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship which ended in victory on January 1, 1959, ushering in a new era of independence, freedom and socialism for the island country.

Paulo Fernandez Alberto, Charge d’affaires at the Cuban Embassy in Vietnam , said after the revolution came to victory, Cuba has focused resources on national construction and development following the path of socialism. Over the past years, the Cuban people have enjoyed benefits in health care and education as the government has provided subsidy for these fields.

Cuba currently holds huge potential for development in agriculture, tourism, pharmaceutical technology and medicine production, the official said.

Besides its recorded achievements, Cuba is still facing various challenges as a large area of its land has been fallowed, threatening its food security, Paulo said.

The charge d’affaires thanked Vinh Phuc province in particular and Vietnam in general for their warm sentiments towards Cuba . He also expressed his hope that the friendship and solidarity between the two nations would further develop in the future.

Secretary of the provincial Vinh Phuc Party Committee Pham Van Vong offered sympathy for Cuba on its temporary economic difficulties and affirmed that Vietnam would always stand side by side with the fraternal Cuban people and give them the strongest sentiments and support.-Enditem

Hanoi (VNA) – All five Vietnamese students won medals at the 41 st International Physics Olympiad that took place in Croatia from July 17-25, the Ministry of Education and Training announced on July 25.

Dinh Anh Minh from Hue National School won a gold medal.

Pham Binh Minh from Tran Phu Gifted High School in the northern port city of Hai Phong , Pham Van Quyen from Le Hong Phong Gifted High School in the northern province of Nam Dinh and Phan Van Trung from Hanoi-Amsterdam Gifted High School took silver medals.

Nguyen Hoanh Dao from Lam Son Gifted High School in the central province of Thanh Hoa secured a bronze medal.- Enditem

Silk paintings spotlight Vietnamese culture in France
 

Paris (VNA) – Nearly 40 Vietnamese silk paintings are on display at an exhibition that opened in the Vietnamese Cultural Centre in Paris , France on July 24.

The exhibition, the fist of its kind in France , is being co-organised by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnamese Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition Department, the Vietnamese Embassy in France and the Vietnamese Cultural Centre in Paris .

As part of activities to celebrate the 1,000 th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, the exhibition featured daily activities of Vietnamese people, contributing to introducing the country’s traditional culture to international friends.

The event, which will run until August 30, has attracted great participation of both Vietnamese and French artists.-Enditem

Vietnam, Pakistan talk over enhancing relations
 

Hanoi (VNA) – Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung has hosted a cordial reception for Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Hanoi on July 22 on the sidelines of the 17 th ASEAN Regional Forum.

During the meeting, Deputy PM Hung stressed the need for both countries to implement the agreements reached at the 2 nd session of the Vietnam-Pakistan joint committee and other memoranda of understanding signed earlier to soon make the current friendship and cooperation between the two countries more comprehensive in the future.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi congratulated Vietnam for the success of the 17 th ARF. He expressed delight at the fine relations between Vietnam and Pakistan which he said have developed over the recent past, reflected through the bilateral visits at all levels as well as stepped up cooperation in national defence, trade and education.

He thanked Vietnam ’s support for Pakistan ’s efforts to increase its ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and said he believed his country’s relations with Vietnam as well as with ASEAN will continue to develop in the future.- Enditem

Vietnam joins Asia Pacific law association
 

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam officially joined the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (LAWASIA) on July 25.

LAWASIA president Lester G. Huang presented the membership certificate to lawyer Le Thuc Anh, President of the Vietnam Bar Federation (VBF) on a ceremony held the same day in Hanoi .

Huang said LAWASIA welcomes the VBF as a national lawyers’ association to become one of its official members.

VBF head Le Thuc Anh praised the role and position of LAWASIA in developing and promoting the legal profession in Asia and the Pacific.

He underlined that the VBF and the circle of Vietnamese lawyers will do their utmost to contribute to the successful and effective cooperation with the LAWASIA as well as for progress and development of the lawyer profession in Vietnam and in the region.

After the ceremony, the VBF had an official working session with the LAWASIA President on the future cooperation programmes and other international schemes relating to the promotion of the legal profession.

Founded in August 1966 in Australia , LAWASIA is an international organisation of lawyers’ associations, individual lawyers, judges, legal academics, and others which focuses on the interests and concerns of the legal profession in the Asia Pacific region.

The governing body, the LAWASIA Council, is comprised of representatives of the supreme legal bodies in 27 countries and over 1,500 individual members from over 50 countries.

The main goal of the association is to promote the professional relations among lawyers and enhance their legal practices.- Enditem

Young volunteers welcome Hanoi’s anniversary in Laos
 

Vientiane (VNA) – The Young Volunteers’ Summer Campaign 2010 launched by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCMCYU) of Hanoi concluded in Hatsaiphong district in the Lao capital city of Vientiane on July 24 with fine outcomes.

The six-day campaign aimed to boost friendship and cooperation between the HCMCYU of Hanoi and the Vientiane Youth Union and mark the 1,000 th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, said Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi HCMCYU Nguyen Hong Dan, who is also Chairman of the Hanoi Youth Association.

The delegation provided free medical check-ups and medicines for more than 1,000 people and presented gifts for beneficiaries and families living in difficult circumstances. Two sets of computer and a number of sports equipment were also handed over to children in Vientiane during the campaign.

The Hanoi HCMCYU partnered with the Vientiane Youth Union to build a club for Phothon school as a joint work of the two capitals’ young people to celebrate Hanoi ’s millennial anniversary.

The Vietnamese volunteers took part in cultural and sports activities and exchanged experiences in youth union work with the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union.

This is the fourth successive year the Hanoi HCMCYU has organised voluntary activities in Laos , contributing to bolstering the special solidarity between the two nations.-Enditem

Vietnamese firms focus more on Cambodia
 

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Vietnam ’s business groups have over the past year revved up investment in Cambodia and actively contributed to the local social security programmes, said the Association of Vietnamese Investors in Cambodia (AVIC).

At a review meeting in Siem Reap city on July 25, the AVIC said Vietnam has become the third largest foreign investor in Cambodia , after China and the Republic of Korea .

According to statistics presented at the meeting, Vietnamese businesses were granted licences for 63 projects within the past year with a combined investment capital of 900 million USD.

Various economic groups and corporations in Vietnam have entered the Cambodian market, investing in different areas including telecommunications, finance and banking, air transport, agriculture, light industry, rubber and industrial tree planting, mining, energy and healthcare.

Prominent among Vietnamese investors are the Vietnam military telecom corporation (Viettel), the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), the Vietnam Coal and Minerals Corporation (VINACOMIN), Vietnam Airlines and Hoang Anh Gia Lai group.

Asides from trade and investment activities, Vietnamese businesses have over the past year provided funding to the local social welfare schemes, with the total pledge mounting to 6 million USD.

As part of the move to promote Vietnamese investment in the country, the Bank of Investment and Development of Cambodia, a Cambodia-based affiliate of BIDV, launched a new branch in Siem Reap.

The BIDC has earlier set up two branches in Ho Chi Minh city and Phnom Penh in order to create a link between the financial markets of Cambodia and Vietnam and provide the most perfect financial services packages for Vietnamese enterprises wishing to invest in Cambodia.- Enditem

VN provides free eye surgeries to Cambodian patients
 

Tay Ninh (VNA) – A delegation of Vietnamese voluntary doctors on July 25 wrapped up their working trip to Cambodia ’s Svay Rieng border province where they provided free eye examinations and surgeries to the poor patients.

The trip was jointly organised by the Tay Ninh Red Cross and Nguyen Trai hospital in Ho Chi Minh City .

Within two days’ working, the Vietnamese doctors conducted cataract surgeries for 176 patients and distributed free medication to 310 others in the province.

The total cost of the trip, including operation fee, medicines and gifts to the people, was 200 million VND (roughly 10,400 USD).- Enditem
