VN, Australia look toward a comprehensive partnership

Meeting Australian Deputy PM Wayne Swan on June 26, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng showed his pleasure at considerable progresses of the Việt Nam-Australia relationship towards a comprehensive partnership.

He described Australia as one of the leading trade and investment partners and expressed his desire that the two countries would spare no effort to reach a special and effective action program for comprehensive partnership as well as finalize negotiations for agreements on extradition, judicial assistance, scientific cooperation, and customs cooperation.

The Vietnamese leader suggested Australia consider possibilities for mutual recognition of food safety and hygiene; help Việt Nam train cadres and establish verification centers.

PM Dũng affirmed that Việt Nam, as Chair of ASEAN in 2010, will do its utmost to enhance cooperation between ASEAN and partners, especially Australia.
Australian Deputy PM Wayne Swan made commitment to PM Dũng’s proposals while underlining his government’s determination to promote economic, trade and investment cooperation with Việt Nam and continue its ODA for Việt Nam’s infrastructure development.

VN ready to back Ethiopia’s cooperation with ASEAN

In his meeting with Ethiopian PM Meles Zenawi on the same day, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng stated that Việt Nam wants to expand its ties with the East Africa, through Ethiopia, while being ready to function as the gateway for Ethiopia to enhance cooperation with ASEAN.

The PM informed that Việt Nam will host the 2nd Việt Nam–Africa International Conference in August 2010. The Conference, focusing on food safety, agricultural cooperation, and poverty reduction, is expected as a good chance for Việt Nam and African countries to share their experience and solutions relating to the fields of common concern.

PM Dũng suggested Ethiopia link hands with Việt Nam in mapping out trilateral cooperation projects on agriculture, exchanging more business delegations and founding favorable regimes for closer Việt Nam–Ethiopia relations.

For closer cooperation with the Netherlands

PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and Dutch PM Jan Peter Balkenede, during their Saturday afternoon meeting in Toronto, were pleased with the 15-time increase in the two-way trade exchange, from US $110 million in 1999 up to US $2 billion in 2008. The figure was kept at around US $1.7 billion last year despite the world economic downturn.

PM Dũng took the occasion to thank the Northern European country for its coordination with Việt Nam in designing the Strategic Partnership Agreement on Responding Climate Change and Water Management.

For his part, PM Peter Balkenede welcomed his Vietnamese counterpart’s upcoming visit to his country this year and expected that the tour would breathe new life into the bilateral relations.
