VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam plans to build eight nuclear power plants, totalling 13 turbines in five central provinces: Ninh Thuan, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Ha Tinh and Quang Ngai, according to the master plan for developing nuclear power to 2030, recently approved by PM Nguyen Tan Dung.

According to the plan, nuclear power will be developed based on modern, tested technologies to serve peaceful goals in three phases.

In the first phase (now to 2015), Vietnam will approve investment and locations, select contractors and train managers and technicians.

During the second phase (2015 through 2020) Vietnam will finalize construction and put into operation the first turbine at the first nuclear power plant – Ninh Thuan 1. The second turbine will begin operating in 2021.

Concurrently, construction of Ninh Thuan 2 will begin while preparing for construction of the other plants.

In the third phase (2020 to 2030), Vietnam will build the other nuclear power plants, turning this source of power into a major energy source.

Vietnam aims to master nuclear power plant design technology in this phase. Accordingly, the country will join with foreign partners to design its nuclear power plants and Vietnamese firms will join nuclear power projects, accounting for 30-40 percent of the total construction value.

By 2020, the first nuclear power turbine will run with a capacity of around 1000MW. By 2025, the total capacity of nuclear power plants in Vietnam will reach around 8000MW and will rise to 15000MW by 2030, making up 10 percent of the country’s total power output.
