On April 18, 2010, in response
to questions from the media about the reason why Vietnam
has not yet issued an ASEAN Chair’s Statement and not convened a special ASEAN Summit on the recent situation in Thailand,
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nguyen Phuong Nga said:
“Vietnam
always respects the ASEAN’s principles of consensus and non-interference in the
internal affairs of any member country.
As the ASEAN Chair, Vietnam
timely consulted with Thailand
and other ASEAN member countries on issuing the Chair’s Statement on the recent
unrest in Thailand.
Based on feedbacks from ASEAN member countries, the fact
that many ASEAN member countries already expressed their view and the
developments of the situation in Thailand,
Vietnam
finds it unnecessary to issue the statement at this point.
Through consultations, ASEAN member countries did not
endorsed a convention of a special ASEAN Summit on the Thai’s situation./.
