Norwegian trio return to HCM City
HCM City (VNA) – Norwegian conductor Truls Sanaker and his colleagues will stage a concert at the HCM City Opera House this week, accompanied by the city’s Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO).
The event will feature trumpeter Tomod Asgard, flutist Synnre Li and trombonist Terje Grondahl performing compositions by English composer Vaughan William.
They will perform “ Sea Songs” and “ English Folk Song Suite” supported by young artist from the city orchestra.
The concert will continue with a solo performance by Asgard playing Haydn’s “ Trumpet Concerto in Es-dur”.
Having performed in HCM City and Hanoi several times in recent years,
all the artists are comfortable playing with local musicians.
Ministry offers 1,000 scholarships
Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry of Education and Training is offering over 1,000 scholarships including 800 PhDs using the State budget for teachers, staff, government workers and excellent students.
The State has spent around 100 billion VND (5.3 million USD) annually since 2004 in this overseas training scheme, according to Bui Trung Thong, chief administrator of the ministry’s International Education Development Department.
Post-graduate students with excellent results who have been financially guarantee by public universities under the State’s management are eligible for the scholarships.
Candidates must be healthy, professional, able to speak the appropriate foreign language and morally sound.
According to the ministry, the scholarships will be prioritized to develop those who have signed long-term contracts with public universities, research institutes, high-tech zones and State-owned enterprises. However, they must commit to returning to their agencies or jobs in line with State requirements after graduating.
Candidates will also be prioritized if they work in industries such as science and technology; social science; economics and management; art; sports; pharmaceutical and medicine; agricultural forestry and aquaculture.
The ministry says applications will be accepted until May 1 this year.
“Studying and living in a developed country could help Vietnamese students access more advanced education systems, so I think I will apply for the scholarship,” said Nguyen Hoa Binh, a young teacher from the Biotechnology Department of the Hanoi University of Agriculture.
Birthday facelift for Hanoi
Hanoi (VNA) – The Construction Department is expected to join a project to rejuvenate Thang Long-Hanoi for the city’s 1,000 anniversary at the beginning of April.
It will paint houses; refurbish public works; clear illegal advertising signs and ban pavement encroachment.
Municipal agencies will help home owners who take responsibility for the renovation of their houses.
City-managed offices will receive 47 billion VND (about 2.4 million USD) for the work.
“Black and red are banned to ensure consistent colour,” said Tran Duc Dung, director of the Ba Dinh Urban Management Office.
About 2,000 dust bins and public toilets will be installed at bus and train stations.
Parks and flower gardens will also be replenished.
Thoroughfares including Bac Thang Long-Noi Bai, Lang-Hoa Lac and Highways 1.5 will be renovated in addition to those in Hoan Kiem and Ba Dinh districts.
Encouragement for people to join project has been disseminated in most wards.
“Most people support the project but some still hesitate to repair of repaint their houses because of their financial situation,” said the management office director.
The director said he was worried about the clearing of uncontrolled advertising signs and stopping pavement encroachment.
“The problem is how to keep the advertising signs in order and pavements clear and clean,” he said.
Tu Liem district Urban Management office director Do Anh Tuan warned that commune, wards and hamlet officials would have to “diligently follow up the project to ensure its success.”
Hue city hosts educational technology seminar
Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) - An international seminar on “educational technology and occupational environment in Vietnam ” was held in the former imperial city of Hue on March 18 under the auspices of Hue University and France ’s Toulouse University .
The event drew representatives from universities in France, Thailand , Laos , Cambodia , and Vietnam and a number of international organisations.
The 21 reports presented at the seminar focused on the current state of the educational technology and occupational environment in Vietnam and other countries in the region, as well as on training technology in developed countries, engineers in charge of human resources management, and the latest techniques in educational technology and distance training.
Educational technology plays a crucial role in helping Vietnam integrate into the global economy, said the reports.
During the seminar, participants pointed out weaknesses in Vietnam ’s educational technology, saying that tertiary education has not matched with employers’ demands and vocational training has failed to meet rural labour demands.
“Vocational training need to be renovated to match with the society’s practical requirements,” stressed Associate Professor Dr Ha Van Hoi from the Hanoi National University.-
Regional development triangle expands to 13 provinces
Phnom Penh (VNA) – Three more provinces will be added into the regional development triangle, bringing the total localities to 13 following an approval of revising a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Nov. 26, 2008.
Under the proposal passed by officials from Cambodia , Laos and Vietnam at a recent meeting in Banlung city, the Cambodian province of Rattanakiri , three new-added provinces are Binh Phuoc of Vietnam , Kratie of Cambodia and Champassak of Laos.
At the fifth meeting of the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam development triangle coordination committee from March 16-18, the participants agreed with a proposal to draw a list of items that will enjoy preferential tariffs if having certificates of origin from the three countries as well as establish a joint technical subcommitee on policy making and priorities in order to promote investment in the triangle.
Participants agreed that Vietnam will chair meetings on a joint tourism development plan for the triangle. They also were unanimous in the enhancement of cooperation among the three countries’ coordination committees, thus implementing the MoU on the triangle at national level, they said.
The participants shared the same view on the establishment of a website on the triangle and hailed Vietnam ’s assistance in helping Cambodia and Laos carry out the plan.
Prior to the meeting, a Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam fair was held in Banlung city on March 14-15 with the participation of businesses from provinces in the triangle.
Besides, Cambodia , Laos and Vietnam held an investment, trade and tourism promotion meeting and a cultural exchange programme for young people from triangle’s provinces.-
Belgium’s professor honoured with insignia
Hai Phong (VNA) – Prof. Dr Luc Hens of the Free University of Brussels has been presented with an insignia “For the cause of construction, protection and development of Hai Phong city.”
The award ceremony was held in the northern port city of Hai Phong on March 18.
On the occasion, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Van Thanh also offered the scholar the city’s certificate of merit in recognition of the Belgian professor’s contribution to Hai Phong’s development, particularly in environmental protection.
Over the last 10 years, Prof. Doctor Luc Hens, Head of the Human Ecology Department of the university, has conducted scientific researches and provided consultation on environmental protection serving the city’s socio-economic development master plan.
He also managed environment-related projects funded by Belgium and the EC to Hai Phong city.
The professor, together with his colleagues at the Hai Phong Maritime Resource-Environment Institute, has published more than 10 publications on environmental protection in both English and Vietnamese languages.
Photo, video contest launched in response to Earth Hour
Hanoi (VNA) – The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) in Vietnam and the “Saigon Tiep thi” newspaper on March 18 launched a photo and video contest on Earth Hour 2010.
Entries for the contest will touch upon actions that bring in positive changes amidst climate changes or the impacts of climate changes in Vietnam .
