A workshop to discuss how to deal with natural disasters was held in Hanoi on January 27 by the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control.

Vietnamese experts presented a draft ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response, which aims to minimise human and material losses caused by national disasters.

Vietnam pays special attention to management of natural disasters and emergency response, as it is one of the few countries adversely affected by global warming, they said.

Some proposed methods of increasing ASEAN’s capacity to make correct forecasts, release early warnings and be well prepared for disasters to minimise risks.

They called on ASEAN countries to incorporate natural disasters mitigation into their national development programmes to cope with global warming and ensure sustainable development.
