Monday, 14 December 2009
Vietnam will continue to participate in projects of the UN
Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest
Degradation (UN-REDD), said a senior official.
Minister of Natural Resources
and Environment Pham Khoi Nguyen made the commitment while meeting with UN-REDD
Director Yern Katerere on the sidelines of the 15th UN Climate Change
Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Dec. 12.
Nguyen spoke highly of UN-REDD’s grant of 4.5
million USD to support Vietnam
’s efforts in improving the forestry sector’s capacity and planting 5 million
hectares of forest.
The minister said Vietnam needs more assistance from
UN-REDD and other international organisations in afforestation and forest
management which are considered as one of the nation’s major tasks in realising
the National Target Programme on Climate Change.
Katerere applauded Vietnam’s cooperation and
participation in UN-REDD projects and pledged to help the country seek more
funding in this field in the coming time.
Vietnam is one of nine countries around the world chosen by
UN-REDD to carry out its project on a trial basis. The country plans to set up
a UN-REDD network across the country following the test period, which requires
up to 12 million USD./.
