– A videoconference between Vietnamese PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and leaders of some countries took placed
on Wednesday evening, focusing on climate change.
The conference was joined
by Danish PM Lars Lokke Rassmussen, Australian PM Kevin Rudd, Mexican President
Felipe Calderon, Ethiopian PM Meles Zenawi, and Algerian PM Ahmed Ouyahia.
The discussions
concentrated on initiatives proposed at the UN Summit scheduled on December 18
in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The leaders also discussed
national commitments to the success of the Summit, including the launching of the US
$10-billion Copenhagen Fund to assist the countries severely affected by
climate change.
They
urged developed countries to slash down the emission of greenhouse gases, promote
clean technology transfer to developing and underdeveloped countries, and
establish a global coordinating organization to supervise the realization of
commitments.
Việt Nam highly
appreciates important initiatives to protect the Earth’s climate, especially
efforts to help developing countries minimize greenhouse gases and respond to
climate change, stated PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng in the conference.
He asserted that developed
countries and financial organizations should adopt preferential assistance mechanisms
in favor of the countries severely affected by climate change, including Việt Nam.
PM Dũng emphasized that Việt
Nam calls on and thanks the international community for cooperation and assistance
to Việt Nam
in coping with climate change and sea level rising.
“With joint efforts of each
and every country, Việt Nam
is strongly confident in the success of the upcoming Copenhagen Summit,” the
Vietnamese leader said.
